Amnesty International says it confirmed the new victims of spying in collaboration with Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza daily. The daily identified the alleged victims Thursday as former deputy treasury ministers Pawel Tamborski and Rafal Baniak, as well as some advisers in the previous liberal government. They were linked to the 2014 sale of state chemical giant CIECH to a private investor. The current conservative government, which won power in 2015, says the company was sold at a loss and blames members of the previous administration.

Rescue crews in northern Italy have recovered a tenth body following a deadly avalanche sparked by the collapse of a chunk of melting glacier. Alpine rescue crews used dogs and drones to find the remains on the Marmolada glacier east of Bolzano. To date only six of the 10 bodies have been positively identified, including those of two Czech citizens on Thursday. Crews have found body parts at the site of Sunday's disaster, evidence of the fierce force of impact of the avalanche on the hikers.
A former company office manager has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for stealing over $580,000 from the business, including COVID-19 relief funds, and using the money to buy a boat and other items. Thirty-five-year-old Jessica Pechtel had pleaded guilty in court in New Hampshire to one count of fraud. Pechtel, of Andover, Massachusetts, had full access to the company’s finances. Prosecutors said she made unauthorized purchases and transfers of funds to accounts that she controlled over 18 months. Her lawyer asked for a sentence of five years of supervised release, noting that she had been released for five months under supervision, and there were no issues.

The unemployment rate dropped to 5.1% in May, the lowest level on record.
Nebraska Republican state Sen. Mike Flood will officially join the U.S. House on Tuesday when he’s sworn in to fill the seat of disgraced former U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry. Flood, a former speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, will take his oath of office at the U.S. Capitol. Flood defeated Democrat Patty Pansing Brooks in a special election to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Lincoln and dozens of smaller communities. Fortenberry, a Republican, resigned in March shortly after a California jury found him guilty of charges that he lied to federal investigators about $30,000 in illegal campaign contributions from a Nigerian billionaire. Flood will hold the seat until at least January. He'll face Pansing Brooks again in November.

Public education advocates are promising to block the bill and want voters to erase it during November’s election. The French government has unveiled a 20 billion-euro ($20.3 billion) package of measures meant to help struggling households cope with the consequences of the war in Ukraine, including rising energy and food prices. Two families are suing a southern Indiana funeral home where police found more than 30 bodies, including some that were badly decomposed. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Clark Superior Court No. 6, Cynthia Faye Cook and Jeffrey Lorey allege that Lankford Funeral Home in Jeffersonville gave them misleading information about the remains of their daughter, Nicole Dallas Lorey. They say the funeral home’s director, Randy Lankford, told them the company didn’t have a container in which to send her remains. The family of James “Mike” Settle alleges Lankford gave them similar reasons for not sending them his remains. The families' lawyer, Larry Wilder, told The Associated Press on Thursday that other families are expected to join the suit.
U.S. prosecutors have announced charges against a government agent and private investigator in a widening probe of an alleged scheme to stalk and harass Chinese dissidents in the United States. Department of Homeland Security Deportation Officer Craig Miller and former DHS worker Derrick Taylor were named in an indictment filed in federal court in New York City on Thursday. According to court papers, a Chinese operative hired Taylor to obtain personal information about several Chinese dissidents living in the United States. Taylor allegedly recruited Miller to provide him records. It was unclear if they had attorneys who could comment on the allegations. A message was left on Thursday with DHS.
