One million pills containing fentanyl were seized during a raid near Los Angeles this month in what the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is calling the largest bust of its kind in California. The DEA says the pills were found when agents served a search warrant July 5 at a home in Inglewood that investigators believe was a stash house with links to Sinaloa cartel traffickers. Officials say the pills have an estimated street value of $15 to $20 million dollars.

CHICAGO — The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday alleging the recent overhaul of Wrigley Field violated federal law by failing to make the park “appropriately accessible” to fans who use wheelchairs or have other disabilities.

Cleveland Guardians starter Aaron Civale has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right wrist after pitching just one inning in Wednesday night’s loss to the Chicago White Sox. The team made the move with Civale before opening a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers. Civale, who spent time earlier this season on the IL with a strained glute muscle, threw 20 pitches before leaving the game. Manager Terry Francona said he’s been dealing with a wrist issue for some time. Civale missed significant time with a  sprained right middle finger last season. The 27-year-old is 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA in 12 games this season.

A retired Indiana teacher who pleaded guilty to grabbing a 15-year-old student and slapping him across the face in a school hallway has been sentenced to one year of probation. An Elkhart County judge sentenced 62-year-old Michael Hosinski to one year in prison on Thursday, with the sentence suspended to one year of probation. Hosinski pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of battery causing moderate injury. He was a sociology teacher at Jimtown High School when he slapped a student in February, causing the youth's head to hit a wall. Hosinski was originally fired by the Baugo Community Schools, but the school board approved his retirement shortly afterward.

The abortion bans taking effect after the nation’s highest court overturned Roe v. Wade vary greatly in how they define when a pregnancy can be ended. Some laws restrict abortion at 15, 22 or 24 weeks of pregnancy. Gestational age is the term used to describe how far along a pregnancy is. Pregnancy begins when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterus, but the timing for any individual pregnancy can’t be precisely determined. The most common method for determining gestational age: how much time has passed since the first day of the last menstrual period.

A lawsuit has been filed in Michigan to try to disqualify a Republican candidate from the governor's race. The lawsuit says Ryan Kelley should be declared an insurrectionist whose votes won't count because of his role in the U.S. Capitol riot in 2021. Kelley is charged with misdemeanors. The U.S. Constitution says anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. and has taken an oath to support the constitution cannot hold office. Kelley took an oath in 2019 when he was a planning commissioner in a Michigan community. Kelley is one of five candidates in the Aug. 2 Republican primary. The winner will face Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in November. Republicans say Democrats are simply trying to "meddle' in the GOP primary.

Offensive tackle Mitch Schwartz, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in 50 years in 2019, announced his retirement Thursday because of lingering effects from a back injury. The 33-year-old Schwartz, who had played in 134 consecutive games with Cleveland and Kansas City, hurt his back against Buffalo in October 2020. He had surgery in the offseason and skipped last year in the hopes of making a full recovery. Schwartz was voted a first-team All-Pro in 2018. He also was picked to the second team on three occasions.

Northern California police have arrested six people after finding $100,000 of stolen power tools, weapons and other items in an underground bunker at a homeless encampment. The San Jose Police Department said officers on Tuesday recovered the property that was stolen from a nearby business. Police say the thieves stole three hunting shotguns, ammunition and three pickup trucks that were used to transport the haul to a bunker near San Jose's Coyote Creek. The Mercury News reports patrol officers saw one of the stolen trucks in the area and stopped a man on Monday. The bunker was searched after the man was arrested.

Freddy Freeman’s former agent and his company have sued a radio host for libel, alleging Doug Gottlieb falsely claimed Casey Close never informed the first baseman of the Atlanta Braves’ last contract offer. Close and Excel Sports Management filed the suit in U.S. District Court, accusing Gottlieb of “false, disparaging and derogatory” comments in a tweet they claimed were made “in a grossly irresponsible manner." Federal officials are soliciting outside help as they craft definitions for old growth and mature forests under an executive order from President Joe Biden. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management said Thursday that they want public input on a “universal definition framework” to identify older forests needing protection. Biden in April directed his administration to devise ways to preserve older forests as part of the government’s efforts to combat climate change. Older trees release large volumes of global warming carbon dioxide when they burn.

MINNEAPOLIS — An hourslong standoff between law enforcement and a man who allegedly fired shots inside a south Minneapolis apartment building ended early Thursday when he died after being shot by police, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

A Chicago police officer who was facing possible dismissal after being accused of striking a woman and knocking out one of her teeth during a protest has resigned from the department. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates officers’ use of force, said in a report released Wednesday that Nicholas Jovanovich resigned from the Chicago Police Department in April. COPA says it found Jovanovich used “unnecessary and excessive force” against 18-year-old Miracle Boyd as protesters tried to topple a Christopher Columbus statue in Chicago’s Grant Park on July 17, 2020. Jovanovich denied making contact with Boyd's face. The incident was captured on video.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has rejected a Republican Party request that the board authorize county elections officials to scrutinize signatures on absentee voting documents, citing concerns that the proposal would create unequal standards across counties. The board rejected the request Thursday in a 3-2 party-line vote, with three Democrats voting against signature verification and two Republicans voting in favor. Supporters of the request urged the board to strengthen election security before the November elections, when a few hundred votes could be the tipping point in several close races. But voting rights advocates warned the proposal could disenfranchise disabled and elderly voters whose signatures might have changed since they registered to vote.

A judge says Democrat Shelia Edwards can remain on the ballot for Georgia’s Public Service Commission, even though she doesn’t live in the district she would represent. Senior Superior Court Judge David Emerson says in a Wednesday ruling that the District 3 election is exempt from the residency rule. The judge says that's because candidates are running to fill two unexpired years remaining on the term of former Commissioner Chuck Eaton. Gov. But prosecutors say one survey indicated it was just beneath the surface of the ever-shifting river bottom. That would put it at greater risk of breaking. Bridger rejected the allegations as “conspiracy theories.” Prosecutors are pursuing a parallel case against a related company that spilled 600,000 gallons of crude in North Dakota in 2016.
