Segundo Villa-Qillay, 40, of Waterbury, has been charged in a motor vehicle crash on June 15 police said killed a motorcycle rider.

WATERBURY — Police say they have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcycle rider last week.

Segundo Villa-Qillay, of Waterbury, was charged with felony evading responsibility causing a death, Waterbury police said. The 40-year-old was also charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and improper turn in connection with the June 15 crash, police said.

Waterbury police said investigators were able to locate the driver and vehicle, a 2010 Honda CRV, that fled the scene through “a variety of investigative means.” The day after the crash, police released photos of the SUV they believed fled the scene.

Villa-Qillay was charged on an arrest warrant and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Around 5:35 p.m. on June 15, police were called to the intersection of South Main Street at Market Square, where they found a motorcycle on the ground. The rider was standing nearby with “road rash” on several parts of his body.

The rider, 28-year-old Nygil Craig, told police he’d dropped the bike while attempting to avoid another vehicle that cut him off.

He was hospitalized, but later died, according to police. The state’s medical examiner said the cause of Craig’s death is pending further evaluation.
